  • Mental Health Outcomes: Mental, Behavioral, and Neurodevelopmental (MBN) disorders, specifically Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Depression, were tracked using standardized ICD-10 medical diagnostic codes across both cross-sectional and longitudinal (de novo development over time) analyses. 1

Key Finding 1: Late Sleepers Face Higher Mental Health Risks

When examining actual sleep timing, late sleep schedules consistently predicted poorer mental health outcomes, regardless of a person's underlying natural preference:

  • Cross-Sectional Likelihood: Displaying a late timing of behavior was linked to a significantly higher likelihood of having an MBN disorder, depression, and GAD.

  • De Novo Risk: In longitudinal tracking, individuals who routinely went to sleep late were significantly more likely to develop new diagnoses of depression, anxiety, and overall mental health disorders over time.

In short, night owls who forced an earlier sleep schedule actually protected their mental health, defying their natural biological inclination. Meanwhile, morning larks who stayed up late suffered a sharp increase in psychological distress. 1

Why Is Staying Up Late Harmful?

Why does late-night wakefulness harm psychological well-being, even when total sleep duration and sleep stability are accounted for?

  • The "Mind After Midnight" Hypothesis: Prolonged nocturnal wakefulness alters prefrontal cortex functioning, the region of the brain responsible for risk assessment, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Late-night hours are strongly correlated with increased behavioral disinhibition, mood alteration, and impulsive decision-making.
